Redfish: These copper-colored bruisers are the pride of Texas inshore fishing. They're known for their powerful runs and that distinctive black spot on their tail. Redfish love to cruise the shallows, often revealing their location with their tails sticking out of the water – a sight that gets every angler's heart racing. They're around all year, but fall is prime time when they school up and feed aggressively. Expect a good fight and some excellent eating if you decide to keep one for dinner.
Speckled Trout: Also called spotted seatrout, these guys are the bread and butter of inshore fishing here. They're beautiful fish, with a mouth full of teeth and a body covered in black spots. Specks are known for their soft mouths, so setting the hook just right is key. They're most active in the cooler months, but you can catch them year-round if you know where to look. Light tackle enthusiasts love the challenge of finessing these wary fish, and their flaky white meat makes for some top-notch fish tacos.

Redfish are a local favorite here in Jamaica Beach. These copper-colored beauties typically range from 20-30 inches, with some monsters pushing 40+ inches. You'll find them in shallow bays and flats, often tailing in water so skinny their backs break the surface. They love to hang around oyster reefs and grass beds, especially during fall and spring. Redfish put up a great fight, with powerful runs that'll test your drag. Their firm, white meat makes excellent table fare too. When sight-casting, look for their distinctive tail waving above water as they root for crabs and shrimp. My go-to trick is using a gold spoon - something about that flash drives them crazy. Just remember to work it slow and steady along the bottom. Whether you're after a bull red or some slot-sized fish for dinner, targeting these guys is always a blast.

Sea trout, also called speckled trout, are a staple in our local waters. These silver-sided fish usually run 14-20 inches, though we occasionally hook into some gators over 25 inches. They prefer slightly deeper water than reds, often hanging around drop-offs and channels near grass flats. Spring and fall are prime times, but we catch them year-round. Sea trout are known for their soft, delicate meat - perfect for a fresh fish fry. They're not the hardest fighters, but make up for it with their willingness to bite and tasty fillets. Anglers love targeting them for their abundance and the challenge of finding schools. When the bite is on, it can be non-stop action. A local tip: try a popping cork rig with a live shrimp about 18 inches below. Work it with sharp jerks to mimic fleeing bait, and hang on - trout can't resist it.
